about

taxi sets out to challenge convention and stimulate the senses with a unique formula of inspired vocals, acoustic instruments, and electronic atmospheres with its debut album ‘blue zero one’ on frankfurt-based infracom! records.

rooted in the dance culture, taxi makes chill out tunes with a song and a message. ‘blue zero one’ is the perfect post-club remedy for poets on a come down.

it's eclectic, disturbing, beautiful, and thought-provoking work.

happy to defy convention, taxi’s new album "blue zero one” doesn’t sit easily within any current musical genre or style.

one thing is certain however – this is an album of exceptional beauty crammed with some of the most innovative, original, intelligent, and sexy songs you will hear this year.

it may be a cliché but: taxi’s ‘blue zero one’ takes you on a journey through jazz, house, soul, blues, and beyond...

with the seductive and soulful vocals of joel at the wheel, and the intensity of paul cullen and simon lovejoy’s pulsating production engine, you are guaranteed a trip to remember.

comparisons to portishead, air, and massive attack are obvious but listen closely… and influences from such greats as marvin gaye, larry heard, and ella fitzgerald all make their presence felt in this original and unique album.

"blue zero one” is taxi’s first release on infracom! and brings together 12 songs written over a period of nearly 10 years.

already making waves within the chic underground scenes of paris and tokyo, taxi promise a ride you won’t want to miss this year. climb aboard.

The title "livin on the wire” from the first 12” of Taxi on INFRACom! has been taken for the new "timotei” shampoo-tv-comercial by j.w. thompson in france

personnel

jo laundy: vocals, lyrics, feel, swing.
paul cullen: programming, songs, samples, atmosphere
simon lovejoy: rhythms, programming, songs, madness

blue zero one…the songs:

yes it’s true – "fast track to the top floor - ambition, dream, desire. lookin’ for that little kick that’s gonna take you higher.” minimal vocals hit downbeat deep house in this funky offbeat cut.

people come running – with near perfect reviews throughout the world’s music press, this beautiful ballad combines classic song writing with futuristic production.

no way talk – a funky double bass puts in the sleaze and joel adds ‘the sexy’ in this lounge groover with sax and attitude.

devil – a cautionary tale elegantly told. is this deep funk without the drummer? sweeping chords, dark pulses, deep strings and rhodes licks melt together with joel’s vocals to produce something special.

take what you want – simple but funky. this groover builds to a thumping climax guaranteed to get your granny on the dancefloor!

rely on me – taxi go large on the layers and take this tune to the third dimension. electronica, pads, horns, rhodes, and a simple melody create a deep, dark, and dangerous dish.

want – joel’s exquisite vocal performance – performed in one take - leads the way in this liquid lullaby. rhodes and marlon cherry’s great backing vox roll this groover out.

tell me – a punchy bass underpins electronic hits and sampled riffs in this funk-filled song about freedom of choice.

an other day – a disjointed groove generates the paranoia in this unusual song about the day in the life of a drug dealer.

i just can’t win – the blues get the taxi treatment in this downbeat, dark, and beautiful song. feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up as the chorus glides in and the pads arrive…

black and blue – a haunting trumpet line, a simple groove, and a challenging subject make for a modern masterpiece.

love fool – deconstructed rhythms and beats with a truly awesome vocal from joel create something that is both beautiful and uniquely ‘taxi’.

some answers…some questions…

where does the name taxi come from?

we thought taxi was a good choice because it takes you on a journey - hopefully this is what are music also does.

what is your exact function (dj, producer)?

jo is the vocalist...she brings her unique and creative talent to the taxi project by adding her special flavour to the music. simon and paul both write, arrange, produce, and engineer the tracks. all roles are shared throughout the tracks. a collective creative partnership

do you have a musical education?

simon has been at the cutting edge of the british underground techno music scene since the late eighties...
paul worked in journalism and wrote for the music section. a competition inviting local bands to send in their demo tapes inspired him to try making a career in music (the quality of entries was so bad!!!!!)
jo has performed live with dozens of bands at thousands of gigs...her drug of choice is playing live..there is nothing she enjoys more than performing in front of a crowd.

how did you start making music and when?

simon's first recording was released 1990/91- under the name the picnic suite. he was inspired to make music after playing live percussion in clubs including the limelight, legend, cafe de paris. paul has made music since he was young and has been involved with several projects. early success with a band called bvr and a publishing deal with polygram has kept him producing. jo found her voice at university where she was studying literature and philosophy. she has always been involved in live music. taxi gave her the chance to sharpen her skills in the studio.

what kind of music did you listen to before?

simon - spiritual music
paul - everything
jo - all sorts
i think you'd find it difficult to find a three people with more varied musical tastes....some rhythms, some vocals, some blues, jazz, ambient...perhaps this is why taxi sounds the way it does!!

how would you describe your music and your style?

unique...grown up...personal...introspective.....intelligent......subtle.....subliminal....open
soulful vocals with ambience and subtle rhythm

are there special marks/characteristics?

lots of space...subversive rhythms....rich textures....beauty....

is there anything you want to achieve with your music if so, what?

we all believe taxi is an intelligent project that will create an emotional response from people who listen to it. you should dance, cry, and smile when you listen to our music. it's a labour of love that we are all committed to. it is proof that three people from very different backgrounds can come together as a band and make beautiful music....
taxi is a beautiful journey with the people you love.....
